    Licensed producers and multi-state operators grow the plant – in greenhouses, outdoors and indoors. Equipment suppliers and REITs provide technology and land.

Market overview

A market being reshaped by regulation

  • Since 28 April 2026 the US Drug Enforcement Administration lists medical cannabis from state-licensed programmes and FDA-approved cannabis products in Schedule III. Licensed medical operators are no longer subject to tax rule 280E. A decision on full rescheduling follows the hearing held in summer 2026.
    • 24 US states and Washington, D.C. allow adult use of cannabis; 41 states allow medical use.
    • Germany legalised possession and home cultivation for adults on 1 April 2024. Imports of medical cannabis rose to 201 tonnes in 2025, almost three times the previous year.
    • In April 2026 Canadian producer Organigram acquired Berlin-based Sanity Group for up to 250 million euros, the largest acquisition in the German market to date.
